Alexander Wang

Alexander Wang has supplied uniforms for the model-off-duty since his eponymous line of elevated streetwear debuted its first full womenswear collection in 2007 to wide acclaim. Known for effortlessly cool head-to-toe monochromatic modern grunge looks and accessories with imaginative detailing, Wang is a household name amongst the it-crowd of the downtown scene and famed for extending his runway shows into memorable inventive afterparties.

Originally from San Francisco, Wang’s laid-back, versatile aesthetic is influenced by his observations of everyday uninhibited moments. At 15, he found himself sketching shoes onto dinner napkins, and at 18, he flew to London to take a summer course at Central Saint Martin’s where he completed a collection of 35 designs, all before returning stateside for a two-year stint at Parsons School of Design.

Along with winning the CFDA Fashion Fund award in 2009, Wang has received some of the highest accolades across the industry including the Swiss Textiles Award, CFDA/Swarovski Designer of the Year Award for Accessory Design, GQ US Best Menswear Designer of the Year Award. In 2012, he held the reins at Balenciaga as creative director, but stepped down in 2015 to refocus attention to his own line.

Expert craftsmanship and innovative materials play major roles in Wang’s designs, but relaxed, feature-worthy street style is ever present in his signature touches, resulting in easy pieces that are never boring. Though the textures and fabric feel of his clothes are reminiscent of athleisure apparel—a trend he popularized by regularly bringing sportswear references to the runway— there are always certain luxe elements that are undeniable whether it lives in the tailored fit of a track short or the gabardine of a pair of reinterpreted chef pants.
