AMI, French for “friend”, and which also happens to make up the initials of founder and creative director Alexandre Mattuisi’s name, is an all encompassing Parisian menswear brand for the easygoing style-conscious male. Founded in 2011, AMI represents the insouciant chicness that pervades Parisian street style.

Hailing from the pastoral countryside of Normandy, Mattuisi aspired to be a ballet dancer as a child but became disheartened by the aggressive competition he witnessed at the Paris Opera Competition. In contrast, he finds in fashion room for everyone to tell their stories and considers only himself a competitor as he strives for self-improvement with each season.

In 2013, Mattuisi, became the grand prize winner of the ANDAM Fashion Award—a prestigious grant responsible for catapulting the careers of Maison Martin Margiela and Christophe Lemaire. Following this endowment in 2016, the Chambre of Syndicale de la Mode Masculine, a division of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (the governing body of the French Fashion Industry), inducted the emerging designer as a member.

With a career résumé boasting Givenchy, Marc Jacobs, and Christian Dior, Mattuisi is no novice when it comes to first-class design that parallels the quality of the legacy French fashion houses he’s worked in. He created AMI to pave way for a more accessible approach to ready-to-wear for men who aspire to a more authentic sensibility in attire that is simple yet exudes notable characteristics. “I always say the more natural you look, the more interesting you are,” asserts Mattuisi.

Take note of the everyday chino he’s evolved into a tailored piece with a novel carrot cut and tech-savvy neoprene leather sneakers, all inspired by his inner-circle of friends. And though mainly marketed to men, AMI’s smarter offerings like the classic blazer or crisp button-down shirts are versatile enough to be borrowed tailleur for women as well.
