Alexander Wang turned to yesterday’s pioneers of American fashion for a collection of denim, knits, and suits designed for the women of today: unapologetic, strong, and quintessentially cool. Paying homage to the New York designers that paved the way, Wang presented Collection 1 2020 in four parts, each of which embodied the distinct style of a classic American designer.
While the first part turns to bold shoulders, luxe fabrics, and a subdued color palette, the second installment presents a selection of denim in every imaginable wash and cut. The designer plays with a sea of denim from a light acid hue to pure, jet black. Wang experiments with a variety of silhouettes from micro to mini and for the daring, an asymmetrically hemmed skirt. Key pieces from Collection 1 2020 go west courtesy of deep browns, suede fringe, and rich plaids. Finally, the designer encapsulates the essence of the Wang woman with all-white looks inspired by the very women who shape his brand.
The thread that unites the four-part collection is thus: The designer has the unique ability to take on all of the various elements of the American wardrobe to create something that embraces the past while still staying modern and current with his own unique twist.
