In 1919, Cristóbal Balenciaga’s luxury fashion house was founded in Spain, to which he famously dressed royalty and aristocrats. When the Spanish Civil War broke out, Balenciaga took his feminine and innovative designs to Paris where his transformative silhouettes immediately gained popularity. Since then, fashion greats like Oscar de la Renta, Hubert de Givenchy and Nicolas Ghesquiere have started their illustrious careers at the house.
Fast forward to 2015, when Georgian designer Demna Gvasalia was appointed the creative director. An alumnus of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, his grasp on mixing luxury with street style cemented his status in the fashion industry. At Balenciaga he has kept the house a popular destination for the modern woman with his flattering and inventive designs.
