Franz West

Regardless of the frequent art-viewing trips he took with his mother as a young boy in Vienna, Franz West did not pursue a career in art until he was 26 years old when he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. It was there that he began creating collages out of plaster, paper-mache, polyester, wire, among other things. His unconventional collages evolved into portable mixed media sculptures called “Adaptives,” which explored the relationship between artwork and viewer.

His art is used as a social experience, exploring the ongoing dialogue between the viewers and the object as his sculptures are only actualized when the viewer physically interacts with it. West’s exploration expands into art and design including home furniture such as floor lamps and seating.
