Known for his celestial chandelier designs, Hans Harald Rath was born in 1904 in Vienna into the J. & L. Lobmeyr Austrian glassware dynasty, becoming the fourth generation head of the company. After being gifted a book of distant galaxies by Wallace K. Harrison, architect of the Metropolitan Opera House, Rath designed the auditorium’s sputnik chandeliers that would become one the venue’s most iconic features and significant design projects of the period.

Although largely recognized for his light designs, Rath also created timeless modern pieces to complement refined interior spaces. Revisiting one of his earlier designs from 1952, the Alpha series was inspired by a copper cup from the Middle Ages exhibited at the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna. Each piece is made from high quality lead-free, hand-blown crystal and delicately colored for a subtle tint.
