When Salvatore Ferragamo made his first pair of heels at just nine years old, he knew he was born to create shoes. He went on to study shoemaking in Naples, Italy, and launched his label in Florence. It was only after he immigrated to the United States where he found success designing shoes for Hollywood stars in the 1920's. He obsessed over details like fit and comfort, which he combined with colorful silhouettes to create innovative designs like the wedge heel.

After years of living and working in the United States, Ferragamo took his label back to Florence, where he expanded to leather bags, eyewear and ready-to-wear. In 1960, Ferragamo died and left the company in the hands of his family.
