Founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry in London, the label was first focused on the development of outdoor attire and was revered for its unique waterproof fabric. It wasn’t until the 1920s when the house made trench coats for military personnel with their iconic check lining did the house move into the luxury fashion market. As of 2018, Riccardo Tisci, formerly creative director of Givenchy, leads as the brand’s chief creative officer, succeeding Christopher Bailey who served as CCO since 2001.

Bailey is credited for turning the brand into a digital leader and overseeing a reinvigoration of the company's design. Since Tisci’s appointment he has redesigned the logo and monogram, as well as banning the use of fur and stopping the practice of burning unsold goods. Tisci has also spearheaded collaborations with streetwear brand Gosha Rubchinskiy and eccentric womenswear designer Vivienne Westwood, signaling a new era for the brand.
