The Art of Getting By

The Webster’s Founder and CEO, Laure Heriard Dubreuil, is back in sunny South Florida for an action-packed bevy of Art Basel happenings. Follow along, in frocks as tropically colored as their art deco backdrop, as LHD hosts, mingles, dines and dances through her sandy South Beach stomping grounds to show us what’s new, what’s hot, and what’s a must-see in five days.

When you’re always working, it’s nearly impossible to find the time to make it to, say, Art Basel Buenos Aires or Dubai Fashion Week, as much as I wish I could. So, to get to be part of Art Basel Miami Beach is an especially exciting time of the year for me! I love that Art Basel resides in one of my favorite cities; not to mention, The Webster’s place of origin. So, what’s on my Magic City agenda? An art-infused rush of openings (from Design Miami,  ICA, and Gagosian to Katie Stout at the Nina Johnson Gallery!), parties (from Jean Pigozzi’s book signing cocktail fete on the second floor of The Webster to Gucci’s dance-all-night disco at The Bath House!), and special performances (alongside PUBLIC sculptures at The BASS). The entire city is aglow in a neon deco dreamscape that looks so good it’s guaranteed to boost any insta feed. Just point and shoot! On the off chance you that you don’t get to attend Art Basel’s star-studded, Wu-Tang attended events, might I suggest that you stop at the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens for a subtropical sojourn through their 17th and 18th-century-inspired gardens or head over to the Art Center of South Florida and catch the Estructuras de la Razón exhibition. In between all of the commotion of catching must-sees like Abstract/Non-Abstract presented by Gagosian and Jeffrey Deitch, try to steal a moment to sit beneath the billowing Spanish bougainvilleas at Rouge’s Courtyard. Their Moroccan drinks are delicious. Or stop by Wat Buddharangsi Buddhist Temple for some spiritual cleansing. Their mouthwatering offering of authentic baked goods is just as heavenly. For a fail-safe zen end goal, then, I suggest the Fontaine Bleau’s Lapis Spa. The Ayurvedic ritual treatments are otherworldly. Or try The Standard Spa for herbal infused massages and conscious breathwork. Whatever you do, don’t leave before you’ve taken a swim in the ocean!

I need all the brainfood I can get for my busy day at starting out with OTL’s Granola rolled oats which includes hemp seeds, coconut, dates and a sprig of almond milk. My Thursday schedule starts with the contemporary non-profit  NADA opening. Lunch is shared between the Ronan & Erwan Bourollec designers, highlighting their installations of sleek decor and W Magazines Oliver Peoples lunch who specialize in unique eyewear. My night heads over to the Fair Opening at the Brickell City Center and over to the Standard Spa Hammam for the Visionaire Steven Klein. The night is topped off with the celebration of the book superstore Assouline, for their Warhol party, who, you guessed it, is publishing their coffee book table must have on Andy Warhol’s work prolific. I end my night at the neon-lighted beach bar, Double Club Prada.

LHD collection

The rich Art Deco architecture and vibrant shades served as inspiration when I was designing the first LHD collection.
Here, I’m wearing the Bird Street blouse with Delfina Delettrez Seal Hoop Earring.

Before the close of Art Basel, don’t leave before seeing Paul Sevigny’s art exhibition at the Nautilus Hotel.

Miami Beach Convention Center

The Miami Beach Convention Center is the official home and hub of Art Basel. It’s here that leading galleries from across the globe come together and display significant works from the masters of modern and contemporary art, as well as new generations of emerging stars. Paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, films, and editioned works of the highest quality are on display in the main exhibition hall. Ambitiously large-scale artworks, movies, and performances become part of the city’s outdoor landscape at nearby Collins Park and SoundScape Park.

Can’t decide where to eat? Dare to be bold and hit all the hotspots—Four Seasons The Surf Club, Upland, or Casa Florida at ROAM—don’t worry, I’m not judging! I always like to grab an Under the Mango Tree concoction, like a pink dragon smoothie or happy buddha juice, to keep hydrated and healthy under the Florida sun.

The BASS Museum

If you couldn’t make Art Basel this year but may find yourself South Beach-bound sometime soon, don’t miss the newly reopened Bass Museum! It satisfies all of your contemporary art cravings.

One of the best parts of traveling to Miami? The Beach!

LHD cleverly pairs her colorfully coral-inspired  Vera earrings and namesake
Star Island shirt with Gucci’s  tapestry-style embroidered denim jacket.

That’s all for now. See you soon!
